Mourning during transitions in coming of age and fairytales

In my previous blog I wrote about a sense of loss of continuity of self that can be experienced during transitions in coming of age for young persons.

I pointed out that stories that address these existential experiences can help with the deep feelings provoked.

Fairy tales especially are stories that can connect us with these feelings of loss and with our capacity to mourn the loss so that we can confidently be curious about the process of internal and external
change.
Fairytales give room to explore fears and desires that can feel unbearable or threatening and fairytales do not shy away from death and rebirth. They are a genre for young and old because in the end we discover that we do not actually lose ourselves but that we find ourselves time and again in surprisingly fresh ways, fairytales can help
us recognising that at any age.
